The first study in the series was by Kline and Szafran (1974) who masked digits with an array of short horizontal and vertical line segments (visual noise). Both the target digit stimuli and the masking visual noise stimuli were presented to the same eye (monoptic stimulation). In a later study, Kline and Birren (1975) presented the first target stimulus to one eye and the second masking stimulus to the other (dichoptic stimulation). Both studies showed similar results: Older people were more susceptible to the masking than younger people. That is, after the target stimulus was no longer physically present, the second stimulus masked the perception of the first one after time durations longer for the old man than for the young. These studies were in confirmation of stimulus persistence theory, indicating that it takes the old longer to process a stimulus than the young.
