In the Landahl-Birren study, when the two weights were presented simultaneously, one in one hand and one in the other, discrimination performance of the older group was less good than that of the young group. If we accept this as a baseline for further age comparisons, an interesting result is seen. When the two weights were presented successively in one hand, first the standard and then the comparison weight, the two age groups performed very similarly. If we start with the proposition that the old perceive weights less well than the young (as in the simultaneous condition, when the trace of the standard stimulus is in the nervous systems of both the old and the young) we can speculate that the old are benefited relatively, when only they have a persisting or recent comparison trace and the young do not. This interpretation becomes more interesting when it is recognized that short-term memory is involved in the successive condition and not the simultaneous one.
