AGE AND BEHAVIOR: PROCESSING SENSE INFORMATION - SEQUENTIAL INTEGRATION - FUSION OF DISCRETE SHOCKS

Axelrod et al. (1968) stimulated the fingers of the hand with mild shocks. The threshold for being able to perceive the shocks as the discrete stimulations they were was measured with two groups of people aged 21-34 and 65-75 years. Each subject was told that sometimes the shocks would be applied simultaneously and sometimes successively. The task was to judge whether the stimuli were presented together or separately.
The successive shocks were applied in four different ways, but two are of interest here. One way was with the mild shocks applied to one hand and the other was with the shocks applied to both hands, i.e., the first stimulus to one hand and the second stimulus to the other.
In line with the stimulus persistence model, the old fused the successive presentations more readily than did the young. The temporal thresholds were higher for the bimanual stimulations than for the uni-manual ones, and this was more the case for the old than for the young. That is, fusion took place more readily with the stimulation of one hand than two, and this was even truer for the old than the young. Axelrod et al. explained the higher temporal thresholds of the bimanual stimulation on the basis that there are contralateral projections to the brain from each hand, and with two hands there is interhemispheric interaction involving synapses. Thus, with the aged, especially when additional synapses are involved, there might be "greater persistence of evoked activity [than with the young, giving] rise to a greater increase in temporal threshold..."
