AGE AND BEHAVIOR: CONTACT WITH THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT – PAIN

There is much clinical evidence that old people do not feel pain as intensely as do younger people. Severe internal diseases of the aged do not seem nearly as painful to them as they would to younger adults. Minor surgery can often be performed on old people without inflicting severe pain; coronary thrombosis occurs often without the agony found in young people. Paradoxically, however, subjective sensory complaints are very common in old age.
Weiss (1959) reviewed the literature on pain thresholds in later life and concluded that, while the aged seem to be spared many of the agonies of disease and surgery, the "statistics as to the incidence of these clinically observed changes are few." The fact is, the laboratory data are not only few, they often show no age change in pain sensation at all. Part of the inconsistency in the literature lies in the difficulty of measuring pain. The feeling of pain, and certainly the reporting of it, appears to be related to personality and to cultural influences.
One of the better older studies, one that does corroborate clinical experience, was reported by Schludermann and Zubek (1962). Radiant heat was applied with a projector to five different parts of the body while the subject lay on an air mattress. Each person was told that the procedure was not a test of the ability to endure pain but of the ability to perceive the first trace of it. He was given a stop watch which he started when the heat apparatus was turned on, and which he stopped when he first felt pain.
