AGE AND BEHAVIOR: PROCESSING SENSE INFORMATION
It is impossible to separate the processes of sensation from perception except by some quasi-arbitrary decision. This is so because all measurements are based upon the response of the subject, and, in this response, a multitude of factors interact continuously. By convention, perception is usually taken to include more interpretation of the external stimulus than is sensation. The more complex, ambiguous and emotion-arousing the stimulus, the more the room for interpretation. Thus, operationally, more often than not the distinction between sensation and perception is made on the basis of the nature of the stimulus. It is through sensation and perception that the person interacts with his environment. If, with age, there is impairment in these processes, the person's effectiveness is either limited or must otherwise be compensated. Studies which include analyses of age changes in compensatory adjustments resemble studies in personality or cognition as much as they do perception.
