Probably in no other area of psychological investigation are the findings as clear-cut as they are in sensory age changes. Old people do not see or hear as well as young people do, and decline in sensitivity is present also in taste, smell, and touch. The ability to see detail at far distances declines with age, although up to the 40s and 50s this decline is very slight. More apparent, and beginning very early in life, is the decline in ability to see things well that are up close. Other visual processes also change, e.g., the ability to differentiate colors and brightnesses, the ability to see in the dark, and probably the time it takes to adapt to the dark. Raising the level of illumination is especially helpful to older people. Hearing ability also declines with age, but the loss is not equal across all frequencies of sound. High pitch tones are progressively less audible for the elderly while those of lower pitch are better heard. The decline with age is relatively slight, however, before age 50, or with tone frequencies less than 1,000 Hz. There is evidence that this auditory change is at least partly due to environmental insult rather than inevitable maturational age change. Old people have difficulty in discriminating among pitches, especially the higher ones, as well as in hearing them. The high pitches are the consonants and the lower ones the vowels.
