Taste ability is governed by many factors. Some studies, but not all, showed that smoking is a factor—it diminishes ability to taste. Attitudes toward food and eating are important. For this reason, perhaps, plus those of the difficulty of measurement, the results of studies vary. For example, Cohen and Gitman (1958) found no significant age decline in taste sensitivity to salty, bitter, sour, or sweet stimuli. The data on smell are even sparser than those on taste—most of the evidence of age decline is indirect or of a clinical nature. The results of two recent laboratory studies suggest smell sensitivity does not decline (see Engen, 1977). However, one of these studies was of unusually superior people and the other of very few subjects. The data are thus still to be collected in this very difficult area of research. *173\220\8*
